WIA participant excels academically

Several months ago, Susan Gibson, was laid off from MIG of Lexington.  Following the initial lay off, she visited the Tennessee Career Center there to see what services might be available to her.  Due to the fact she was a dislocated worker, who lost her job through no fault of her own, Susan immediately discovered that she was eligible for WIA services.

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a program which partners with the Tennessee Career Centers and provides job training and placement assistance.

“I met with Susan because she was TAA eligible.  She was referred to us by the Tennessee Department of Labor,” explained WIA Case Manager Bettina Webb.  “I could sense right away that she had determination and a strong work ethic.”

Following her consultation with WIA Case Managers Bettina Webb and Dixie Smith, Susan chose to attend the Tennessee Technology Center (TTC) at Lexington in order to pursue a career in industrial electricity.  While attending there, she has been an exceptional student.  Susan has received both the National Technical Honor Society Award for Outstanding Achievement and the award for Outstanding Achievement in Industrial Electricity.

“I am very pleased with her academic success in a male centered occupation,” said WIA Case Manager Dixie Smith.

After completing her training, Susan looks forward to a successful career in this high-demand occupation.
